Luke Skywalker X-wing Pilot was the first official costume-changed character figure. Initially released in 1978 as part of the 20 Back wave 2 action figures to support Star Wars, A New Hope.
I had this figure as a kid and spent many happy hours playing with it. I bought this last week to reminisce the past times. My original piece has lose arms and legs from hundred of hours spent flicking it with all sorts of kungfu moves kicking and chopping the bad guys.
Got this figure off Carousell just last weekend, it does not come with any weapons therefore able to negotiate down a bit from the asking price. Weapon in these pictures is from another vintage figure but is not the right blaster it should have. So it is Luke's blaster now on a permanent basis. But I suppose this is also not the original blaster design this Luke had. Perhaps will get a repro weapon in the future.
Condition of the figure isn't the greatest, most notably the white helmet has "caramelize" and with some paint wear here and there.Surprisingly the arm and legs still has good friction and snugly fit yet not overly tight. For a 44yr old figure, this is consider as relatively good. condition.
There is an urge to want to refurbish the figure with all the modern techniques and the abundance of specialize paint available, it could yield a very satisfying outcome. Return the caramel helmet to it's original white. Crisp red line running the curve of the helmet. And a couple of waterslide Rebel logo each side of the helmet. Repair the paint bleed and the scuffed off paint here and there. The impulse is very real.
But by doing so, it become a modern figure. Better to wait for Hasbro's Retro line to finally have one of this out be a better option.
That 2 patches of "black thing" above the eyes were thought to be the hair for the longest of times. Only now to scrutinize it again and I'm pretty sure it should be the flight helmet visor. Wait! Isn't it be in orangey yellowish instead of black? But then, Luke's hair should be brownish and not black. The fact that such minute details is included in an action figure released in 1978 is mind boggling. Simply amazing.
I still have vivid memories of what other vintage Star Wars figures I used to own. Will like to buy back that part of my memory when opportunity presents.
